Identification and Conservation of a New Species of
Pithecia in Amazonian Ecuador
Marsh, L.K.
Understanding primate diversity is vital if we are to conserve it. Despite
recent taxonomic research and reviews by Philip Hershkovitz, diversity in
the Amazonian genus Pithecia is still poorly understood. Here we
describe our observations of a saki monkey of this genus in the Yasuni
Biosphere Reserve at the Tiputini Biological Station (TBS), Ecuador.
According to the range hypothesized by Hershkovitz it should be
attributable to Pithecia aequatorialis. It is not. It is probable that it is a
new species or subspecies, and we describe our ongoing studies to
ascertain its identity through field observation, genetic analysis and
comparison with museum specimens.
