The main objective of the symposium is to consolidate current
knowledge on the pitheciines and plan future research and
conservation.
The symposium will be included in the next International
Primatological Society (IPS) Congress, June 2006, Uganda, it fits in
extremely well with the IPS Congress Theme "Primate Conservation
in Action". Augmented with contributions on the genus Callicebus
(titi monkeys), the proceedings from the symposium will be
published in book form, with supplementary papers on specific
species.
The Specific objectives of the Symposium are to:
- Establish in what way pitheciins are special and unique;
- Determine their taxonomy, distribution and conservation
- status;
- Synthesize what is known about pitheciin ecology and
behaviour;
- Outline the best approaches for their conservation and paths
for future research (see programme for further details).
The symposium counts on the participation of professionals and
students researching the genera Cacajao, Chiropotes and Pithecia.
